Ceftazidime

Ceftazidime is the active substance in an anti-bacterial medication known commercially as Fortaz.

This injectable drug works by destroying the bacterial cell membrane and decreasing the symptoms of infection, thus being indicated for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections, meningitis and pneumonia.

Ceftazidime is rapidly absorbed by the body and its excess is excreted in the urine.

Indications for Ceftazidime

Joint infection; infection of the skin and soft tissues; infection in the abdomen; bone infection; pelvic infection in women; urinary infection; meningitis; pneumonia.

Side effects of Ceftazidime

Inflammation in the vein; vein obstruction; Rash on the skin; urticaria; itch; pain at the injection site; abscess at the injection site; temperature increase; peeling on the skin.

Contraindications for Ceftazidime

Pregnancy risk B; Women in the lactation phase; individuals allergic to cephalosporins, penicillins and their derivatives.

How to use Ceftazidime

Injectable use

Adults and teenagers

• Urinary tract infection: Apply 250 mg every 12 hours.
• Pneumonia: Apply 500 mg every 8 or 12 hours.
• Infection in bones or joints: Apply 2g (intravenously) every 12 hours.
• Abdominal infection; pelvic or meningitis: Apply 2g (intravenously) every 8 hours.

Kids

Meningitis

• Newborns (0 to 4 weeks): Apply 25 to 50 mg of body weight, intravenously, every 12 hours.
• 1 month to 12 years: 50 mg per kg of body weight, intravenously, every 8 hours.
