Candidiasis appears in the intima region due to the overgrowth of a type of fungus known as Candida albicans . Although the vagina and penis are places that have a high number of bacteria and fungi, the body is usually able to maintain a balance between them, preventing the onset of symptoms.
However, when there is a lack of intimate hygiene, unprotected intimate contact or some health problem, the organism may present greater difficulty in keeping the number of fungi in balance, causing Candida albicans to develop in excess, causing candidiasis with symptoms such as itching or redness of the site.
Although a large proportion of cases of candidiasis are caused only by poor hygiene of the intimate region or by the transmission of fungi during intimate contact, candidiasis can also be caused by other situations such as:
1. Use of synthetic underwear
The best type of underwear to use is the one made of cotton and a little tight because it allows the skin to breathe and prevents the increase of moisture in the place. Thus, when synthetic clothing is used, the moisture in the intimate region increases, as well as the temperature and, therefore, the fungi are more easily grown, causing candidiasis.
2. Recent use of antibiotics
This type of medicine is used to fight infections, but in addition to eliminating bacteria from the site of infection, antibiotics also decrease the number of bacteria throughout the body. In this way, the bacteria present in the skin of the intimate regions is also affected.
When this happens, fungi can develop more easily, especially Candida albicans, which leads to the development of candidiasis.
3. Uncontrolled diabetes
This is one of the main causes associated with cases of chronic candidiasis, because when it is not treated properly, diabetes lead to increased blood sugar levels, which facilitate the growth and development of bacteria and fungi throughout the body. Sometimes candidiasis is up to one of the earliest signs that you may have diabetes.
4. Excessive stress
The excess of stress is able to diminish the response of the immune system to defend the organism and, therefore, during periods of great pressure it is common the development of infections.
Candidiasis is one of the most common infections in people who suffer from constant stress and anxiety because the immune system is weakened and unable to maintain the balance of fungi on the skin.
5. Hormonal imbalances
The common hormonal changes especially in women, due to the menstrual period, are also able to weaken the immune system and, thus, allow the excessive development of fungi that cause candidiasis.
Similarly, by causing major hormonal changes, periods of a woman's life such as pregnancy or menopause may also be responsible for cases of candidiasis.
6. Autoimmune diseases
Although it is one of the less frequent causes for the development of candidiasis, the presence of an autoimmune disease such as lupus, HIV or rheumatoid arthritis can lead to the development of candidiasis due to weakening of the immune system.
