The penile prosthesis is a device frequently used for the treatment of sexual impotence in man in cases of erectile dysfunction, paraplegia and tetraplegia as it helps to have and maintain an erection during intimate contact.
The penile prosthesis can be of two types:
- Semi-rigid: made with material that keeps the penis always in erection, and can be placed in 3 positions that allow the intimate contact and comfort of the patient in daily life;
- Inflatable: placement of 2 flexible cylinders inside the penis, which can be filled with saline to facilitate erection, allowing it to be deflated after intimate contact.
The penile prosthesis is recommended only for patients who can not obtain satisfactory results with the taking of medicines or other treatments, since the surgery is irreversible.
Penile prosthesis surgery
The penile prosthesis surgery is done by a urologist and lasts about 45 minutes, being performed with local anesthesia and therefore the hospital stay is approximately 1 day.
The recovery of penile prosthesis surgery can last up to 3 weeks, after which the man may initiate intimate contact.
Penile prosthesis surgery can cause some complications such as loss of sensation, infection of the prosthesis or psychological problems related to the satisfaction of the couple.
