Caesarean section is a programmed delivery by doctors that can happen before or after labor has started.
The most common is that it is marked for before the contractions arise, being more comfortable for the woman. However it can also be performed after the contractions start and the drink gives clear signals that it is ready to be born.
Step by step of traditional cesarean
The first step of a cesarean section is the anesthesia given in the spine of the pregnant woman when she is sitting. Next, a catheter is placed in the epidural space to facilitate the administration of medications and a catheter is placed to contain the urine.
The doctor will make a cut approximately 10 to 12 cm wide near the bikini line, and will cut even more 6 layers of tissues until you reach the baby. Then the doctor pulls the baby, which will not hurt, but it can be a strange sensation.
When the baby is removed from the belly the neonatologist should evaluate if the baby is breathing properly and then the nurse can already show the baby to the mother, while the doctor also removes the placenta. The baby will be properly cleaned, weighed and measured and only then can it be given to the mother for breastfeeding.
The final part of the surgery is the closing of the cut. At this point the doctor will sew all the layers of cut tissue for childbirth, which can take an average of 30 minutes.
How is the normal cesarean
A new form of delivery that has been diffused is the normal cesarean section that consists of waiting for labor to begin, and after doctors cut the abdomen, the baby has the possibility to go out alone with the minimum of medical intervention. In this case, the doctor makes the cut until reaching the uterus and only positions the baby to its exit through the abdomen and with the contractions of the uterus it is 'pushed' to be born.
In addition, the mother has the possibility of seeing the baby born because it can observe its own belly, since it is not placed the separation fabric, which is used in the traditional cesarean.
This is an attempt to have a more humanized delivery, being closer to normal delivery, but with anesthesia and without fear that the baby does not have passage through the vagina. This new type of delivery is safe, but it can not always be performed by any medical staff, and you need to talk to your doctor about the desire to have this type of delivery before labor begins.
When the cesarean section is indicated
The main indication for cesarean section is the mother's desire to choose this method of birth for the baby, but some other situations that demonstrate the need to perform a cesarean section are:
- Maternal illness that prevents normal childbirth, such as HIV positive and high, active genital herpes, cancer, severe heart or lung disease;
- Diseases in the baby that make normal delivery impossible, such as myelomeningocele, hydrocephalus, macrocephaly, heart or liver on the outside of the body;
- In the case of placenta previa or accreta, placental detachment, very small baby for gestational age, heart disease;
- When the woman has had more than two cesareans, she has removed part of the uterus, needed uterine reconstruction involving the entire endometrium, rupture of the uterus at an earlier time;
- When the baby does not turn and gets crossed in the woman's womb;
- In case of pregnancy of twins or more babies;
- When normal labor is parked, it is prolonged and without full dilation.
In these cases, although the parents want a normal birth, the cesarean section is the safest option, being recommended by the doctors.
