Glycerin suppository is a laxative drug used to empty the bowel in case of gas or constipation, which can be used by adults and children, including infants, as recommended by the doctor. This medicine takes 15 to 30 minutes to have the expected effect, but in the case of babies the effect can be even faster.
This suppository contains as an active ingredient glycerol that softens feces with a greater amount of water, which naturally stimulates the peristaltic movements that drive the feces out.

How to put
- Adults:
In order for the glycerin suppository to have the expected effect it is recommended that the adult drink 6 to 8 glasses of water during the day to help soften the stool. In addition, to introduce the suppository into the anus one must open the package, wet it with clean water and introduce it, pushing it with the fingers. After its introduction one can contract the muscles of the anal region to keep it inside the intestine.
In adults, the suppository takes 15 to 30 minutes to take effect.
- Babies and Children:
To place the suppository in the baby one should lie down on the belly, raise the legs and insert the suppository into the anus, inserting through the narrower part of the suppository. There is no need to introduce fully, and the caretaker can only introduce half of the suppository and hold for a few minutes, because this brief stimulus should already be enough to eliminate feces.
The recommended dose is only 1 suppository per day for the time recommended by your doctor.
Contraindications
The glycerin suppository should not be used by people with appendicitis, in case of bleeding from the unidentified anus of cause, obstruction of the intestine or during recovery from a rectal surgery. It is also contraindicated in case of allergy to glycerin and should be used with caution in people who have the amount of increased blood in the case of heart failure, kidney disease and in dehydrated persons.
This medication should only be used in pregnancy under medical indication.
Main adverse effects
Generally the glycerin suppository is well tolerated and causes only intestinal colic, diarrhea, gas formation, and increased thirst. Sometimes there may be a slight increase in blood circulation in this region that may make the skin more rosy but may also lead to mild local irritation.
