Anacetrapib is a new class of medicine for treating cholesterol diseases, being able to act by lowering LDL levels, which is bad cholesterol, and raising HDL levels, which is good cholesterol.
This drug belongs to the class of cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP) inhibitors, a protein responsible for transporting cholesterol molecules, regulating their levels.
Although not yet being marketed in Brazilian pharmacies, the effectiveness of Anacetrapib has been demonstrated in a recent study, called REVEAL, and can be used alone or in combination with statins, which are already widely used drugs to lower cholesterol levels .
How it works
Anacetrapib is indicated for people with changes in cholesterol levels, and its use is able to:
- Reduce about 20% of LDL (bad cholesterol) and double the value of HDL (good cholesterol) when in use together with a statin, which are currently the most commonly used drugs such as Simvastatin, Atorvastatin or Rosuvastatin, for example;
- Prevent the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack, stroke, death from cardiac causes or cardiac surgery needs.
Thus, Anacetrapib is a promising form of treatment for people suffering from hypercholesterolemia, especially for those who have difficulty controlling cholesterol with current medications.
Side effects
In the studies conducted to date, no serious side effects have been reported from Anacetrapib. Further research needs to be done to consider the possible side effects of the medication.
