One can suspect this disease especially if the patch is yellowish and thicker than normal, which can leave even the eyes glued. In this case it is very important to take the baby to the pediatrician so that he can see the baby and evaluate what can be.
In the newborn baby, it is normal for the eyes to be always dirtier than in adults, so if the baby has a lot of secretion in the eyes, but it is always clear and fluid, there is no cause for concern, as it is normal.
Major Causes of Excessive Remixing
Besides conjunctivitis, which may be viral or bacterial, other possible causes of bleeding and tearing eyes in the baby may be:
- Influenza or cold: In this case, the treatment consists of keeping the baby's eyes properly cleaned and strengthening the immune system with the lime orange juice. As the disease is being cured the baby's eyes will no longer get so dirty.
- Obstructed tear canal, which affects the newborn, but tends to resolve on its own up to 1 year of age: In this case, the treatment consists of cleaning the eyes with saline solution and doing a small massage by pressing the inner corner of the eyes with the finger; but in more severe cases it may be necessary to have a minor surgery.
Tearing eyes on the baby may also occur when the baby accidentally nails the eyes, leaving the eyes irritated. In this case, simply wipe the baby's eyes with saline or boiled water.
What to do to clean baby's eyes
On a day-to-day basis, during bathing, a little warm water should be put into the baby's face without putting any soap in it so as not to burn the eyes, but to clean the baby's eyes correctly without the risk of aggravating the situation, in case of conjunctivitis, for example, should be:
- Wet a gauze or sterile compress with saline or freshly made but almost cold chamomile tea;
- Pass the gauze or gauze in one eye at a time, towards the corner of the eye outwards, so as not to clog the tear duct, as shown in the image above.
Another important care is to always use a gauze for each eye, not with the same gauze if you clean the two eyes of the baby. It is advisable to clean the baby's eyes in this way until he is 1 year old, even if he is not sick.
In addition to keeping the baby's eyes always clean it is also important to keep the nose always clean and free of secretions because the tear duct can become clogged when the nose is blocked and this still favors the proliferation of viruses or bacteria. To clean the baby's nose it is advisable to wipe the outermost part with a wet fine swab in the saline solution and then use a nasal aspirator to completely eliminate any dirt or secretions.
When To Go To The Ophthalmologist
The baby should be taken to the ophthalmologist if he or she has a yellowish, thick patch and it is necessary to clean the baby's or child's eyes more than 3 times a day. If the baby wakes up with too much eyes and with difficulty opening the eyes because the eyelashes are glued one should take the baby to the doctor immediately because it can be conjunctivitis and the use of medication is necessary.
The baby should also be taken to the ophthalmologist if he or she has a lot of patch, even if it is light in color, and needs to wipe their eyes more than 3 times a day because it can indicate that the tear canal is clogged.
