Metoclopramide is a remedy against nausea and vomiting, which promotes emptying of the stomach due to increased motility of the gastrointestinal system and gastric secretions.
Metoclopramide can be purchased from conventional pharmacies under the trade name Plasil, Eucil or Fluccil in the form of tablets, drops or injectable solution, and is produced by Sanofi-Aventis Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
What is it for
Metoclopramide is indicated to combat nausea and vomiting of surgical origin, metabolic and infectious diseases, or that occur after the taking of certain medicines. This medicine is also indicated to facilitate radiological procedures that use the x-ray in the gastrointestinal tract.
How to take
The method of use of Metoclopramide can be:
- Oral solution: 2 teaspoons, 3 times daily, orally, 10 minutes before meals.
- Drops: 53 drops, 3 times a day, orally, 10 minutes before meals.
- Tablets: 1 tablet, 3 times a day, orally, 10 minutes before meals.
- Injectable solution: 1 ampoule every 8 hours, intramuscularly or intravenously.
Side effects
The main side effects of Metoclopramide include involuntary movements, drowsiness, seizures, depression, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, weakness or low blood pressure.
Contraindications
Metoclopramide is contraindicated for children less than 1 year of age, as well as for patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, bowel obstruction, intestinal perforation, pheochromocytoma or with hypersensitivity to any component of the formula. In addition, this medicinal product should not be used by pregnant women without an obstetrician. It should also not be used in case of haemorrhage and Parkinson's disease.
