Ibuprofen is a remedy indicated for the relief of fever and pain, such as headache, muscle pain, toothache, migraine or menstrual cramps. In addition, it can also be used to relieve body aches and fever in case of common cold and flu symptoms.
This medicine has an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-thermal action, which allows to reduce fever, inflammation and relieve pain, and can be taken as drops, tablets, gelatin capsules or oral suspension,
Ibuprofen can be purchased at the pharmacy in generic or branded form, such as Alivium, Advil, Buscofem or Artril, for a price between 10 to 25 reais.
How to take
The recommended doses of Ibuprofen depend on the problem to be treated and the age of the patient:
1. Pediatric drops
- Children from 6 months : the recommended dose should be indicated by the doctor, recommending 1 to 2 drops per 1 kg of child weight, administered 3 to 4 times a day, at intervals of 6 to 8 hours.
- Children over 30 kg : usually the maximum recommended dose is 200 mg, equivalent to 40 drops of Ibuprofen 50 mg / ml or 20 drops of Ibuprofen 100 mg / ml.
- Adults : Usually doses between 200 mg and 800 mg, equivalent to 80 drops of Ibuprofen 100 mg / ml, are given 3 to 4 times daily.
2. Tablets
- Ibuprofen 200 mg: it is recommended for adults and children over 12 years of age, it is recommended to take 1 to 2 tablets 3 to 4 times a day, with a minimum of 4 hours between doses.
- Ibuprofen 400 mg : it is recommended for adults and children over 12 years of age, it is recommended to take 1 tablet every 6 hours or every 8 hours according to medical advice.
- Ibuprofen 600 mg: it is recommended for adults only, it is recommended to take 1 tablet, 3 to 4 times daily, according to medical indication.
3. Oral suspension 30 mg / mL
- Children from 6 months of age : The recommended dose should be indicated by the doctor and ranges from 1 to 7 mL and should be taken 3 to 4 times a day, every 6 or 8 hours.
- Adults : The recommended dose is 7 mL, which can be taken up to 4 times daily.
Side effects
The most common side effects that can occur during treatment with ibuprofen are dizziness, the appearance of skin lesions such as blisters or blemishes, stomach pain and nausea.
Although it is more rare, there may still be poor digestion, constipation, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, gas, sodium and water retention, headache, irritability and tinnitus.
Who should not use
This medication should not be used in people who are hypersensitive to any component of the formula or to other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and medicines for pain or fever.
Ibuprofen should not be used against pain for more than 10 days or against fever for more than 3 days, unless your doctor recommends taking it for a longer time. The recommended dose should not be exceeded.
In addition, ibuprofen should also not be used in cases where acetylsalicylic acid, iodide, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have induced asthma, rhinitis, urticaria, nasal polyps, angioedema, bronchospasm, and other allergic or anaphylactic reaction symptoms. It should also not be used together with alcoholic beverages, in people with gastroduodenal ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding.
Use under 2 years of age and elderly should be carried out under medical supervision.
