Guaco is a medicinal plant, also known as snake herbs, cipó-catinga or snake herb, widely used in respiratory problems due to its bronchodilator and expectorant effect.
Its scientific name is Mikania glomerata Spreng and can be bought in natural products stores and manipulation pharmacies with the average price of 30 reais.
The guaco is used to treat flu, cough, hoarseness, throat infection, bronchitis, allergies, skin infections and rheumatism.
The properties of guaco include its bronchodilating, antiseptic, expectorant, febrile, antiasthmatic, sudorific, antirheumatic and healing actions.
For therapeutic purposes the leaves of the plant or guaco syrup are used.
Side effects of guaco include bleeding, increased heart rate, vomiting, and diarrhea. Guaco contains coumarin which may present a worsening in the pictures of shortness of breath and cough in patients with coumarin allergy
Guaco is contraindicated for individuals with liver disease, individuals who use anticoagulants, and for children younger than 1 year of age.
