One of the ways to know the sex of the baby well in advance is to perform a blood test, called fetal sexing, as early as 8 weeks of gestation.
The fetal sexing test is able to detect the presence of the Y chromosome, the male chromosome, in the mother's blood and gives 99% certainty if it is not done before 8 weeks and if the woman did not perform any blood transfusion or transplant of organ.
The pregnant woman does not need to fast or prepare to take the fetal sexing exam. In addition, the exam does not need to be asked by the doctor to be done, but neither is carried out by the public network, nor is it covered by health insurance plans.
Results of fetal sexing examination
The results of the fetal sexing test, which usually takes 5 to 10 days to get ready, can be:
- Boy: presence of Y chromosome or positive Y chromosome;
- Girl: absence of Y chromosome or negative Y chromosome.
In the case of twin pregnancies, if the result is negative for the Y chromosome, the mother will know that she is pregnant only with girls. But if the result is positive for the Y chromosome, this indicates that there is at least 1 boy, but that does not mean that the other baby is either.

The price of the fetal sexing exam varies between 300 and 500 reais.
