Watching television up close does not hurt the eyes because the latest TV sets, launched since the 90's no longer emit radiation and therefore do not impair vision.
However, watching television with the light off can be harmful to eye health as the pupil ends up having to adapt to different brightness constantly, which can lead to tired sight due to excessive stimulation.
It is much more harmful to the eyes, staring at the sun or at bundles of lights that are used at nightclubs and at shows, and may even cause blindness in the long run.
What is the ideal distance to watch TV?
The ideal distance to watch TV should be calculated according to the size of the tv screen. For this:
- Measure the length of the TV diagonally (from the lower left corner to the upper right corner) and
- Multiply this number by 2.5 and 3.5. The result will be the ideal distance to watch the TV comfortably.
This calculation is for both older and newer TVs, with flat screen, plasma or led. However, this distance can vary considerably from one person to another and what is to be recommended is that it is comfortable to see the whole screen and can read the subtitles without any effort.
